Focusing on the individual-dividual debate, this study offers an empirical examination of decision-making among the Bakkarwal, Himalayan Muslim pastoralists, over two years. It uniquely emphasizes the life cycle, gender, and status differences, addressing a gap in understanding the practice of individuality in South Asian societies. By taking an emic perspective, the author provides insights into the ideologies and lived experiences that shape concepts of self within this community, challenging existing anthropological and psychological frameworks.
