Ovid and the Cultural Politics of Translation in Early Modern England

Focusing on the theme of translation and transformation, this study examines English adaptations of the Metamorphoses from the fifteenth to early eighteenth centuries. Liz Oakley-Brown analyzes both canonical works, like Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, and lesser-known texts, including women's embroideries depicting Ovidian myths. She posits that these translations play a crucial role in shaping national and gender identities, highlighting the social and historical differences reflected in these literary transformations.
