Focusing on the collapse of the Carolingian Empire in 888, this study examines the reign of Charles the Fat to challenge prevailing negative perceptions of late ninth-century politics. It presents a fresh perspective on early medieval kingship, governance, and historical narratives, suggesting that the political landscape of the time was more dynamic than previously thought. The analysis offers new interpretations that enrich the understanding of this pivotal period in history.
