Mechanics of a Functionally-Graded Titanium Matrix Composite

The study focuses on the properties and mechanical behavior of functionally-graded Titanium Matrix Composites (F/G TMCs), particularly the joint area between the composite and alloy. It reveals that this transition region is surprisingly robust, exhibiting nearly the strength of the unreinforced alloy, with plasticity as the primary deformation mechanism. The findings suggest that the monolithic alloy is the limiting factor in fatigue loading, highlighting the importance of strain values in determining the overall fatigue life. This research paves the way for further exploration of F/G TMCs in aerospace applications.
