Robert Lowell emerged as a dominant figure in English-language poetry from 1946 until his death in 1977, beginning with the innovative "Lord Weary's Castle." His 1959 work, "Life Studies," marked a shift from traditional forms to a more personal and politically engaged style. Throughout the 1960s, he explored complex themes, but his later trilogy, including "History" and "The Dolphin," led to a decline in his critical standing.
