Focusing on the transformation of a traditional Muslim Hui village in Northwestern China, this book explores the effects of state schooling on the local economy, culture, and ideology. It delves into the rural interpretation of "quality" education, highlighting the contrasts between poverty and prosperity, civility and uncivility, and religiosity and secularity as perceived by the community. Through original ethnographic research in a secondary school, it examines how Muslim Hui students navigate their identities while striving for a prosperous future.
