Generic Music Style Preferences of South African Adolescents

Focusing on the music style preferences of urban South African adolescents, this study involved 568 grade 9 students in Johannesburg. It explored how various factors influenced their musical tastes, categorizing them into listener, music, and environmental variables. Key aspects examined included the students' demographics, such as gender and socio-economic status, alongside music characteristics like complexity and cultural meaning. Additionally, the impact of external influences, including media and peer dynamics, was analyzed, providing a comprehensive view of adolescent music preferences.
