The first six chapters are autobiographical, beginning with a family tragedy the author experienced at fifteen. He recounts his roots, early childhood, and experiences during World War II, leading to his early career in medicine. In the seventh chapter, he shares the poignant moment he met his life partner. The narrative then follows their journey together, starting with their training at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila, their five years in the US State Department Exchange Visitor Program for further training, and their return to their homeland to serve. Feeling like foreigners in their own country, they decided to return to America, where they achieved unexpected success. Supported by his loving wife, the author became a leading advocate for intraocular lens implantation during cataract surgeries in Massachusetts, despite facing opposition from prominent Boston ophthalmologists. His growing reputation as a young ophthalmologist at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary led to a practice opportunity in Greenfield, Massachusetts, where he received a deferment from serving in Vietnam. While gaining prominence in ophthalmology, he remained connected to his roots, periodically visiting his alma mater to share his knowledge with younger colleagues.
