Feeling like foreigners in their own country, they decided to return to America, where they achieved unexpected success. Supported by his loving wife, the author became a leading advocate for intraocular lens implantation during cataract surgeries in Massachusetts, despite facing opposition from prominent Boston ophthalmologists. His growing reputation as a young ophthalmologist at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary led to a practice opportunity in Greenfield, Massachusetts, where he received a deferment from serving in Vietnam. While gaining prominence in ophthalmology, he remained connected to his roots, periodically visiting his alma mater to share his knowledge with younger colleagues.
