After only eight months in Louisiana, General Benjamin Butler departed New Orleans vilified by many Confederate politicians, their military leaders, the Southern press, and some citizens and foreign consuls living in the city. His eight-month stay was long enough for some Northern politicians who viewed him as a troublemaker. In the South, Butler was regarded as a thief, murderer, and beast.
