The "Riesencodex" of the Hessische Landesbibliothek Wiesbaden contains sacred songs and the liturgical drama Ordo Virtutum by Hildegard of Bingen, alongside her theological and exegetical writings. This facsimile edition aims to enhance understanding of Hildegard's compositions in their original form and to fully grasp her musical interpretation of religious texts, while situating her work within the context of new liturgical-monophonic pieces from the high Middle Ages. This volume explores Hildegard von Bingen's poetic and musical oeuvre, which includes over 70 songs and a spiritual play, with both texts and melodies authored by her. The "Riesencodex," comprised of 481 parchment sheets, likely originated during her lifetime and serves as a comprehensive collection of her work, featuring not only her songs but also her theological writings and correspondence. The edition clarifies the content of the song section and elucidates the repertoire. Additional illustrations document Hildegard's well-known songs with musical notation, while modern transcriptions of the musical examples provide insight into the interplay between text and music. Variant lists complete the work, and discussions on the origins and potential liturgical uses of the songs are included. A glossary and extensive bibliographical references facilitate deeper exploration of the subject.
