Zachytáva v ňom obdobie vlády Jána II., ktoré je zároveň výsekom z dejín storočnej vojny. Panovanie Jána II. sa nesie v znamení sporov o francúzske územie a o francúzsky trón. Potomstvo zahrdúsenej Margaréty Burgundskej, ktoré vylúčili z dedičstva francúzskej koruny, vytvára spojenectvo s Anglickom. Anglický kráľ Eduard III. si robí nároky na francúzsky trón, no rivalita a nepriateľstvo vládne nielen medzi panovníckymi dvormi, ale aj v samom príbuzenstve. Kráľovská justícia sa stáva nástrojom osobnej pomsty.
