Quando è nato il personaggio di Salvo Montalbano? In questo volume sono raccolte le prime tre indagini del commissario più famoso d'Italia, considerato uno dei personaggi più rappresentativi della letteratura italiana. La prima indagine, "La forma dell'acqua" (1994), inizia con l'omicidio dell'ingegnere Luparello, trovato morto nella sua auto in una discarica. Accanto al cadavere c'è una collana d'oro e l'avvocato Rizzo, amico di Luparello, viene avvisato prima della polizia. Salvo Montalbano, commissario quarantino, si occupa del caso. Nel secondo racconto, "Il cane di terracotta" (1996), durante un'inchiesta su un traffico d'armi, Montalbano scopre due cadaveri risalenti a cinquant'anni prima, sorvegliati da un enorme cane di terracotta. Spinto dal desiderio di scoprire una verità dimenticata, il commissario intraprende un'indagine che sembra destinata a non arrivare in tribunale.
