Plochozemi totiž hrozí zrážka so škodoradostnou červenou hviezdou a zachrániť ju môže len Vetroplaš so svojím zaklínadlom. Horšie je, že Vetroplaša naposledy videli v okamihu, keď prepadol cez okraj sveta...

Mesta, kde sa pod tvrdou rukou vládnuceho patricija museli naučiť spolu existovať Cech zlodejov, Cech vrahov a ďalší ctihodní občania. Za pestrou zmesou ankh-morporských obyvateľov v ničom nezaostáva zostava mestskej stráže - aj keď toho času tak trochu v (morálnom!) rozklade. Neutešený stav mužov zákona však posilní čestný podstrážnik Mrkva, ktorého vychovali trpaslíci. Jeho nováčikovské nadšenie kolegov nakopne, a práve včas. Čím skôr totiž treba vyriešiť záhadné zločiny, najmä keď za rohom číha drak...

    Erik je jediný démonologický hacker na Plochozemi. Škoda, že mu to veľmi nejde. Nechce veľa, má len tri želania. Bežné drobnosti – nesmrteľnosť, svetovládu a najkrajšiu ženu sveta. Každý uzná, že je to štandard. Lenže potom namiesto poslušného démona vyvolá z hĺbok podsvetia Vetroplaša, pravdepodobne najneschopnejšieho čarodejníka vo vesmíre, a s ním nevyhnutne aj najvzdorovitejší a najzúrivejší exemplár z výbavy cestovateľa – Batožinu. Spolu s nimi sa vydá na divokú jazdu priestorom a časom a postupne oľutuje nielen svoje tri želania, ale aj tú prostú skutočnosť, že sa vôbec narodil.

    Kľuky obrázkových skriniek sa krútia, maličkí démoni maľujú ako o život a alchymisti sa radujú, pretože objavili mágiu, aká sa na Plochozemi dosiaľ nevyskytla – mágiu strieborného plátna. Ale moment! Naozaj sa tu tá mágia ešte nikdy neobjavila? Viktor Tugelbend, takmer čarodejník, ktorý sa z nedostatku iných príležitostí stal hviezdou novorodeného zábavného priemyslu, počuje tajomné volenie. Ešte tajomnejšie hlasy doháňajú Thedu „Ginger“ Vifinovú, jeho hereckú partnerku bujných proporcií, k nočným výletom a vyhrabávaniu cthinematografickej histórie. Holytrúd sníva svoje sny a o mágii strieborného plátna vie svoje... Ibaže na jej hrozivé dôsledky už zabudol. Ak mu ich rýchlo niekto nepripomenie, realita tentoraz padne pod náporom nereality a neúprosného biznisu holytrúdskeho...

A tí sa práve teraz rozhodli začať páchať samovraždy. Členovia mestskej stráže si tak musia opäť vyhrnúť rukávy (či čokoľvek si zvykne trpaslík, vlkolačka alebo troll v službe vyhŕňať), len aby zistili, že pravda sa možno vôbec neukrýva v temných uličkách nočného mesta.

Na bojisko sa totiž hrnie najgeniálnejší vynálezca i najprefíkanejší politik všetkých čias s malou zásielkou, ktorá isto-iste nastolí mier...
