Ibaže nič nenasvedčuje tomu, že by mal v neobvyklých násilných smrtiach prsty obvyklý Cech vrahov. A to nie je všetko. Chýba aj akýkoľvek motív a jediná stopa, ktorú hlavný veliteľ Mrak má, je kôpka hliny a ešte pár podobne „kľúčových“ dôkazov. Najhoršie je, že hnev znepokojených obyvateľov mesta sa začína obracať na malú komunitu golemov, vážnych hlinených tvorov oddaných otrockej práci, ktorí nikdy nikomu nespôsobili žiadne problémy. A tí sa práve teraz rozhodli začať páchať samovraždy. Členovia mestskej stráže si tak musia opäť vyhrnúť rukávy (či čokoľvek si zvykne trpaslík, vlkolačka alebo troll v službe vyhŕňať), len aby zistili, že pravda sa možno vôbec neukrýva v temných uličkách nočného mesta.
