Jediný povídkový soubor R. Brautigana – autora, který byl právem nazýván literárním idolem kulturního undergroundu 60. let 20. století. Kniha patří k těm textům, jež jsou psány zdánlivě jednoduchým jazykem, oproštěným od jakékoli expresivity, jako by autor chápal realitu naivním, téměř až dětským viděním, o to působivěji ale vystupuje do popředí závažnost každého sdělení, jež směřuje k základním otázkám života a smrti.

Jej príbeh-nepríbeh sa odohráva v surrealistickej krajine, na území nazvanom jaZMAR. V súznení s prírodou tu žije uzavretá komúna v obklopená hmotnou i nehmotnou substanciou, ktorou je melónový cukor. Táto knižka je natoľko hravá, tajuplná a amorfná, že priam láka k viacerým interpretáciám. O jej nádhernú grafickú podobu, ktorá dokonale vystihuje charakter tohoto literárneho klenotu, sa postarala Daniela Olejníková. V melónovom cukre vychádza na Slovensku po prvýkrát. S bravúrnou suverenitou ju preložil Daniel Hevier.

Pstruholov v Amerike – dnes už klasické dielo americkej literatúry – patrí k Brautiganovým najznámejším prózam, v ktorých sa spája reálne s fantastickým, prozaické s lyrickým a komické s vážnym v mnohotvárnych fragmentoch. Celým románom, ktorý je akousi kolážou voľne spojených krátkych epizód, sa ťahá nostalgia za strateným svetom autentických hodnôt, nenávratne pohlteným modernou civilizáciou. Aj ústredný symbol diela – Pstruholov v Amerike nadobúdajúci množstvo podôb – stelesňuje pocit straty s nádychom nostalgie. Obraz veľkého skladu, kde sa hromadia a predávajú nepotrebné veci, je obrazom smetiska, na ktorom sa ocitajú potoky, vodopády, lúčky i stromy, vtáky i pstruhy ako symbol hodnôt. K najpôsobivejším stránkam diela patrí originálne poňatá „filmová“ kompozičná technika, ktorá autorovi umožňuje vsúvať do textu rôznorodé formy prejavu ako nápisy na pomníkoch, kuchárske recepty čí úryvky z denníkov, čim nielen ozvláštňuje, ale najmä osviežuje jeho výpoveď o súčasnej Amerike.

Originální psychedelický pastiš na detektivní žánr z pera významného beatnického autora. Próza Detektivem v Babylónu byla poprvé vydána v roce 1977. Už obálka prvního vydání napovídá, že se nebude jednat o klasický detektivní příběh, ale o vyprávění, které si tento žánr bere jako odrazový můstek k vytvoření absurdního příběhu, v němž se vedle nespočtu humorných situací obnažuje lidská existence. Ne nadarmo byla novela nazvána metafyzickou detektivkou. Hlavní postava C. Card je vystaven neutěšené životní situaci a zároveň prožívá blaženost vyvolávanou sněním. Kdykoli je schopen "přepnout" a ocitnout se ve starověkém Babylónu, kde je vždy úspěšný a vždy po boku krásné přítelkyně Nana-dirat. Ovšem popis dění jednoho odpoledne a večera, ve kterém C. Februar 1948 dem damals zwölfjährigen Richard - und was durch ihn - passiert ist: wie er aus Versehen seinen einzigen Freund erschießt. "In der Küche stand ein Gasherd. Dreaming of Babylon: A Private Eye Novel 1942 is Richard Brautigan's eighth novel & was published in 1977. It's a black comedy set in San Francisco in 1942. The central character, C. Card, is no Sam Spade, but actually does do detective work of a sort, when he's not off dreaming of Babylon.
