El libro se organiza alrededor de cuatro figuras centrales, Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Rafael Cansinos Assens, Guillermo de Torre y Vicente Huidobro, y de dos revistas literarias, Cervantes y Grecia, que abrieron sus páginas a los ultraístas. La investigación se basa en una masa de documentación de la época que abarca tanto periódicos y revistas como la correspondencia personal intercambiada entre escritores que pertenecían al grupo.
