S podezřením na špionáž, protože trasy vlaků byly silně utajeny, rozvíjí pátrání.

George Surridge je ve svých 46 letech již 8 roků ředitelem zoologické zahrady v Birmingtonu. Bohužel jeho rodinný život není příliš šťastný, s manželkou, která je hodně náročná, mu to neklape. Z osobního důvodu neměl jistě nikdo zájmu o přesné okolnosti náhlého úmrtí Andrewa Harrisona, velmi úspěšného bursiána a bohatého finančníka, když byl nalezen mrtev ve svém přepychovém lodním domku na Temži u Henleye. Andrew Harrison nebyl oblíben, jak doma – kde se nerozpakoval dáti všem najevo moc svých peněz – tak i v obchodním světě, neboť se nezastavil před ničím, kynul-li mu z toho prospěch. Ale byly tu ještě jiné důvody k zájmu. Scotland Yardu působila tato „sebevražda“ nemalé starosti. Právě tak vrchnímu inspektoru Frenchovi. A postupem případu tyto starosti jen vzrůstaly.
