Román Nočný cirkus sa odohráva na prelome devätnásteho a dvadsiateho storočia a jeho hrdinami sú dvaja mladí kúzelníci, ktorých už od raného detstva viedli k tomu, že sa zúčastnia na súboji, čo sa mal odohrať na neutrálnej pôde - tou pôdou sa stal Cirque des reves.
