Antala Szerba si nemožno odmyslieť z maďarskej literatúry, či už ako románopisca s vytríbeným štýlom alebo ako uznávaného literárneho vedca. Autora razom priťahovali aj odpudzovali detektívky. Ako umelca ho priťahovala hutná stavba tohto žánru, zápletka, dynamičnosť, ako vedca a esejistu zasodpudzovalo honba za senzáciou, detinské tajnostkárstvo, zlý štýl, nepravdepodobnosť príbehov, silená logika. Z týchto dvoch protichodných pocitov sa zrodilo zvláštne dielo: humoristický román, detektívka, mystický román, satira anglického spoločenského života — a paródia toho všetkého. Postavy a postavičky románu sú napriek svojej vierohodnosti opradené rúškom tajomstva a miestom deja je rozprávkový Wales, Londýn a starý kaštieľ, v ktorom straší... a keby len strašilo, ale...

Mysteriózní povídka maďarského spisovatele A.
