George Orwell bol politický autor, no jeho publicistika sa rozprestiera od každodennej politiky po umývanie riadu a pitie anglického čaju. Tento výber obsahuje osemdesiat stĺpčekov z 40. rokov, ktoré písal pre týždenník Tribune, doplnené o jeho eseje a recenzie. V tejto tematicky rôznorodej zbierke sa odráža Orwellova žurnalistická zdatnosť, svetonázorová orientácia a proces skúmania tém, ktoré neskôr spracoval vo svojich románoch, ako sú nedôvera voči intelektuálom, podozrievavosť voči komunizmu, sociálna rozdelenosť a patriotizmus kontra nacionalizmus. 1984 je významný antiutopický román anglického spisovateľa George Orwella z roku 1949. Opisuje svet, v ktorom vládne absolútna totalita a podporuje ju permanentná vojna. Akýkoľvek priestupok proti kolektívnemu mysleniu Strany je kruto potrestaný, ľudská individualita sa stáva zločinom. Z tohto diela pochádza známy výrok „Veľký brat ťa sleduje!“.

Zvieracia farma je politickou satirou na revolúciu, ktorá sa vymkla z rúk. Zvieratá sa zbavia nadvlády nenávidených ľudí a zavedú si svoj vlastný režim, v ktorom si všetci majú byť rovní. Z nádherných ideálov revolúcie sa však postupne stáva nočná mora. Prasce sa zmocnili koryta, a teda aj vlády, postupne si začali prispôsobovať zákony a legendárny slogan "Všetky zvieratá sú si rovné" sa čoskoro mení na "Všetky zvieratá sú si rovné, ale niektoré sú si rovnejšie". Aby sa prasce udržali pri moci, zavedú teror, šíria strach a hrôzu, poštvú proti sebe zvieratá, zavedú kasty, ... Knihu preložil Miloš Ruppeldt.

Britský spisovateľ a žurnalista George Orwell (1903 – 1950) sa narodil v Indii ako Eric Arthur Blair. Neskôr žil Mjanmarsku a Francúzsku a bojoval v španielskej občianskej vojne. Preslávil sa najmä svojimi dystopiami Farma zvierat a 1984. Ku koncu druhej svetovej vojny pracoval ako vojnový korešpondent pre rôzne britské noviny z povojnového Francúzska, Rakúska a západnej zóny Nemecka. Privádza nás medzi ľudí na úplnom okraji spoločnosti – zbedačených pracovníkov vychýrených parížskych hotelov a reštaurácií a anglických tulákov, ktorých systém nezmyselne núti celý deň prekonávať veľké vzdialenosti medzi jednotlivými útulkami. Chudobných a chudobu si nijako neidealizuje, ale čitateľovi predstavuje jej rozmanité podoby – hlad, špinu, zápach, odovzdanosť, prospechárstvo, ale aj hrdosť, vzdor a vzopretie sa osudu. Trvalo niekoľko rokov, kým George Orwell našiel pre túto knihu vydavateľa, dnes už patrí medzi klasické diela hovoriace o nezamestnanosti, chudobe a ľudskej schopnosti prežívať a vynájsť sa aj v tých najhorších podmienkach.

George Orwell patril k tomu typu ľudí, ktorým sa zvykne hovoriť homo scribens – človek píšuci. Dokladom toho sú aj jeho denníky, ktoré sú predovšetkým náčrtmi úvah, nápadov, postrehov, pozorovaní, dojmov či myšlienok, ktoré neskôr spracovával vo svojej esejistike, literárnej kritike, recenziách a samozrejme v románoch. V tomto zmysle sú nielen reflexiou jeho osobného, či emocionálneho života, ale aj jeho života ako človeka spoločenského, angažovaného, kritického, sociálne cítiaceho a poznávajúceho. Kniha predstavuje vnútorný život spisovateľa, ktorý definoval politické myslenie dvadsiateho storočia. Denníky zaznamenávajú Orwellove mladícke cesty medzi baníkmi a kočovnými robotníkmi, desivý vzostup totalitarizmu, hroznú drámu druhej svetovej vojny, ale aj jeho zdravotné problémy a pozorovania prírody. Výber z Orwellových denníkov sa zameriava hlavne na predvojnové a vojnové obdobie, t.j. roky 1936 až cca 1946, pretože ide o ich nosnú časť. Práve v nich sa najvýraznejšie prejavujú Orwellove osobné, politické a spoločenské postoje, vďaka ktorým prekročil svoju dobu. Denníky rozširujú intelektuálne a čitateľské poznanie diela tohto autora na Slovensku. Román slávneho britského prozaika a esejistu Barmské dni (1934) je zaujímavým príbehom citlivého osamelého úradníčka, životného stroskotanca Johna Floryho, ktorý sa usiluje vykúpiť a vymaniť zo šovinistického prostredia. Jeho súcit s domorodcami sa končí osobnou tragédiou. V románe nenájdeme podrobnejšie informácie o dobovom politickom kontexte. Všetko sa odvíja v malom barmskom skleníku, v jednej z mnohých staníc. Tu skrachovaný pijan stretáva mladú Angličanku, ktorá prišla do Barmy, aby si ulovila muža... Román Barmské dni je plný bolestnej dezilúzie, ktorá rozbíja celistvosť sveta britského impéria i v jeho literárnej rovine, reprezentovanej klasickým realizmom. Je to román o smrti Johna Floryho bez tragického finále, utopeného v bezvýznamnosti nie na konci, lež kdesi zamotane pred ním.

Cesta k Wigan Pier je reportážnym spracovaním autorovho pobytu na priemyselnom severe Anglicka v roku 1936, krátko po skončení veľkej hospodárskej krízy. George Orwell sa zameriava predovšetkým na banícku komunitu a jej životné pomery a postoje. Jeho návštevy v tmavých baniach aj preplnených domoch poskytujú drsný obraz toho, ako v tom čase žila pracujúca i nepracujúca chudoba. Zúfalstvo a bieda, ktoré tento obraz sprostredkúva, majú desivú silu, ktorá presahuje hranice času a štátov. Kniha je zároveň aj Orwellovou cestou k socializmu, keď skúma svoje vlastné vnútro. Narodil sa v britskej strednej triede a spomína, ako postupne začal pochybovať a neskôr nenávidieť prísne triedne bariéry, ktoré rozdeľovali vtedajšiu britskú spoločnosť. Pretože v jeho mysli socializmus v konečnom dôsledku znamená len jeden pojem: „spravodlivosť a sloboda“. Osudy ľudí z robotníckej triedy vykresľuje na základe vlastných skúseností, bez prikrášľovania a idealizácie, ale aj bez predsudkov, akými v tom čase trpeli mnohí mestskí intelektuáli.

Orwellov román z roku 1939 zachytáva život v Anglicku pred 2. svetovou vojnou očami poisťovacieho agenta Georgea Bowlinga. Priemerný obyvateľ stredoanglického predmestia je navonok prototypom príslušníka strednej vrstvy, ale nedokáže sa vyrovnať so spoločenskou realitou. Nerozumie ani svetu manželky Hildy a jeho dvoch detí. Banálna príhoda nasmeruje jeho myšlienky do detstva, neskazeného sveta chlapčenských zábav. Nájde dostatok odvahy a útek do rodného kraja aj zrealizuje. Namiesto krajiny detstva však nachádza cudzie, neznáme priemyselné mesto. Celou knihou sa vinie myšlienka strachu z blížiacej sa vojny a obavy z uniformnej spoločnosti

Dorothy, žijúca s náladovým otcom, farárom z malého mestečka, plní úlohu poslušnej dcéry a šikanovanej pomocníčky v jeho domácnosti. V myšlienkach sa zaoberá kostýmami pre školskú hru, beznádejou kázania chudobným a dlhmi, ktoré nemôžu zaplatiť. Snaží sa byť ostražitá, aj za tennajmenší hriech či nevhodnú myšlienku sa pichne špendlíkom. Jej rutina sa rozbije, keď sa ocitne na dne a bez práce v Londýne. Má na sebe hodvábne pančuchy, vo vrecku peniaze a nevie si spomenúť na svoje meno. Dobrodružstvo hlavnej hrdinky sa pre Orwella stáva príležitosťou zobraziť spoločnosť, v ktorej sú triedne rozdiely osudové, predsudky hojné, príslušnosť k tej či onej cirkvi je samoúčelnou hrou a viera začína slabnúť tvárou v tvár pochybnostiam.

Výber z korešpondencie Georgea Orwella približuje jeho osobnosť nielen ako významného spisovateľa a mysliteľa, ktorý ovplyvnil a dodnes ovplyvňuje generácie spisovateľov a intelektuálov, ale aj ako spoločenského glosátora, aktívneho občana, presvedčeného socialistu a antistalinistu. (1942–1944), přináší žánrově rozmanité útvary od slavných sloupků „Jak to vidím já“ přes literární recenze až po imaginární rozhovor s Jonathanem Swiftem či krutě sebezpytné obsáhlé eseje Ohlédnutí za španělskou válkou nebo Anglický národ. Na jednu stranu Orwell uplatňuje nesmiřitelný postoj levicového politického komentátora, který analyzuje soudobou anglickou společnost, nemilosrdně tepe sociální nerovnost a odhaluje ideologické pokrytectví. V jiné poloze však uplatňuje smysl pro detaily, jichž si všímá v životě lidí vnímaných jako individuality, nikoli jen bezejmenná masa tvořící dohromady množinu anglického národa či španělských republikánů. Popisuje-li „obyčejné“, anonymní aktéry dějinných událostí, vnímá je, i pokud stojí na opačné straně barikády, především jako lidské jedince, již mají v jeho očích všichni stejný nárok na štěstí, natož na samotný život. Jak říká v titulní eseji „Ohlédnutí za španělskou válkou“: „…Přišel jsem zastřelit „fašistu“, ale člověk, který si přidržuje kalhoty, není „fašista“, je to očividně blízký tvor, stejný jako vy, a vám se nechce ho zastřelit.“

Old Major, the old boar on Manor Farm, gathers the animals to share his vision of a rebellion against their human owner, Mr. Jones, whom he likens to a parasite. After Major's death, pigs Snowball and Napoleon lead the charge, successfully driving Jones away and renaming the farm "Animal Farm." They establish the Seven Commandments of Animalism, emphasizing that "All animals are equal." As the pigs assume leadership roles, Snowball focuses on educating the animals, while Napoleon secretly trains a group of dogs. Tensions rise when Napoleon expels Snowball and claims the windmill project as his own. He replaces democratic meetings with a committee of pigs and uses Squealer to manipulate information. When a storm destroys the windmill, Napoleon blames Snowball, leading to purges against those he suspects of treachery. On 15 February 1945, George Orwell left his desk in London to report as a war correspondent about the advance of the Anglo-American troops on the continent and the effects of the war against Nazi-Germany. Orwell travelled in the wake of the victors through bombed-out German cities. Eight months previously the house he had lived in with his family had been destroyed by German bombs. Between 25 February and 10 June 1945, 20 of his articles were printed - 14 in The Observer und six in Manchester Evening News. Two of them are being reprinted here for the first time. Extracts from essays which relate to this journey and "Revenge Is Sour", his best known essay about his experiences in defeated Germany which appeared in the second half of 1945, are supplemented.
