Ernst von Bergmann (1836-1907) gehörte zu den großen Chirurgen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Zahlreiche Operations-Methoden hat er erneuert und verbessert, darunter die der operativen Ösophagus- und Hydrozelenbehandlung. Große Erfolge erzielte Bergmann auf dem Gebiet der Wundinfektion, weshalb er auch gerne als „Vater der Asepsis“ bezeichnet wird. Er gilt außerdem als einer der Wegbereiter der Hirnchirurgie – in vorliegendem Werk legt er davon Zeugnis ab. Bergmann begann seine medizinische Laufbahn an der Chirurgischen Klinik in Dorpat. Im Jahre 1878 erhielt er einen Lehrstuhl für Chirurgie in Würzburg, vier Jahre später wechselte er als Nachfolger von Bernhard von Langenbeck an die Berliner Charité.
