Wang Lung is a farmer. All his life he has worked hard and now he is to be married. His father has arranged a marriage with a poor servant girl from the great House of Hwang. On the morning that Wang goes to collect his bride, he makes a promise. One day, he will own land like the Hwangs. He too, will be rich and powerful.
