Set against the backdrop of British-occupied Egypt in 1952, the story follows Abd el-Aziz Gaafar, a once-respected landowner who faces bankruptcy and moves his family to Cairo. There, he takes a lowly job at the Automobile Club, a place that highlights the stark divide between Europeans and Egyptians. Abd el-Aziz's struggle for dignity leads to tragic consequences when he is punished for standing up for himself, resulting in his death and forcing his sons to continue working in the oppressive environment of the Club.
