Set in Victorian England, the narrative revolves around Nell, a 13-year-old orphan living with her loving but misguided grandfather in a curiosity shop. Isolated from peers, her only companion is Kit, a shop worker she teaches to write. Her grandfather's desperation to secure Nell's future leads him to gamble secretly, resulting in catastrophic losses to the sinister moneylender, Daniel Quilp. As they face eviction and hardship, Nell and her grandfather descend into a life of poverty, highlighting themes of love, loss, and the consequences of obsession.
