"On a blazing hot summer's day on a Norwegian island, hotel guests are shocked when one of their number is found murdered on a desolate plain. The nameless narrator was the last person to see the victim alive. Detective Asbjorn Krag is summoned from the capital, Kristiania, and sets about investigating. When a second body is found on the plain, the mystery deepens: the victim is a man believed to have died years earlier. Drawn unwillingly into the investigation, the narrator is puzzled by the enigmatic detective's apparent inaction.
