This is, without a shade of doubt in my mind, the best novel set in Ancient Athens that has ever been and ever will be written. An insight into what life of an Athenian citizen could have been like so complete and imaginative you can't find it anywhere else. You follow the main character Alexias from childhood into adulthood during the golden age of philosophy, meeting both Socrates and Plato, enjoying the height of Athenian democracy, but also the hardships of Peleponnesian War and tough and cold family upbringing. Even the sentence structure doesn't sound 20th century English, but ancient and foreign. Mary Renault managed to capture all that. True masterpiece of historical fiction.
