Set in 1903 during the Edwardian era, the story follows Jim Stringer, a determined young man who moves to London to pursue a career in railways. Excited to join South East Railway, he quickly discovers that his role involves transporting coffins, and he faces hostility from his colleagues. As he navigates his challenging new environment, he must unravel the mystery of his predecessor's disappearance and survive the dangers of his job, all while developing feelings for his landlady.
