The Mohicans, an Eastern Algonquian tribe, historically inhabited the upper tidal Hudson River Valley and western New England, sharing cultural ties with the Lenape tribe. Following conflicts with the Mohawk during the Beaver Wars, many Mohicans were forced to relocate southeast into Berkshire County, Massachusetts, around Stockbridge. This movement highlights the tribe's resilience and adaptability in the face of external pressures while maintaining their unique cultural identity and history.
