Set in the backdrop of the theatre world, the story follows Elizabeth Dalston, who witnesses what she believes to be a murder while preparing for her acting career. As she navigates her new life, she meets writer Philip Romilly, who helps her with her debut role. Meanwhile, a scheming financier, Sylvanus Power, attempts to sabotage Philip by falsely accusing him of the crime. The plot thickens when it's revealed that the supposed victim is alive, leading to a resolution where Elizabeth and Philip find happiness together.
