Set in 1942 New South Wales, the story follows 11-year-old Lindsay Armstrong, who grapples with his family's move after his grandfather's mysterious death. In the remote settlement of Billarooby, Lindsay encounters a young Japanese soldier escaping from a POW camp. Witnessing the soldier's brutal recapture unveils a dark family secret tied to his oppressive father. As Lindsay explores a picture book on samurai warriors and the Code of Bushido, he reflects on honor and the contrasting values of his world and the prisoners' desires.
