Yergunov, a braggart hospital assistant, faces a perilous journey home through a snowstorm after borrowing the doctor's horse. As he struggles to navigate the treacherous conditions, he recalls a tavern owned by the late Andrey Tchirikov, known for its bad reputation. With no other option, he approaches the tavern, armed with a revolver for protection. The scene intensifies when a pack of dogs emerges, prompting Yergunov to take drastic measures to defend himself. The story explores themes of desperation, danger, and the consequences of recklessness.
