Set in the 1620s Canadian wilderness, Ruth faces the challenges of survival after her father's death. She forms a bond with a wolf named Zak, eventually leading to a pack that aids her in hunting. Her interactions with local Indians are complicated by language barriers, earning her the name Jaga na Kala-Mother of Wolves. Tension escalates when trappers kill an Indian, pushing Ruth to uncover the identity of the murderer among three suspects, testing her resolve and instincts in a harsh environment.
