Set in 1699 Alta California, the story follows Joseph, a facilitator who has served for twenty thousand years under Dr. Zeus, a company that creates immortal operatives. Tasked with imitating a Coyote god, he aims to protect the Chumash people from European colonizers. Alongside him is Botanist Mendoza, who struggles with the loss of her lover Nicholas from Elizabethan England. Their journey intertwines themes of cultural preservation, grief, and the complexities of identity in the face of historical change.
