Set in a small Minnesota town during the 1980s, the story follows Matthew, who faces abuse from the Catholic Church, bullying from peers, and neglect from teachers, compounded by his struggle with being gay. His journey through self-loathing results in an unfulfilled adult life. To cope, he frequently escapes into the lives of three imaginary friends he created during his childhood, highlighting his deep-seated need for connection and acceptance.
