Set in a futuristic socialist utopia, the narrative follows Julian West, an upper-class man from 1887 who awakens in the year 2000 after a hypnotic trance. He discovers a transformed society where women are empowered and everyday life has drastically changed, including innovations like clothing made from strengthened paper. The themes of social reform and the critique of capitalism are further explored in the sequel, "Equality," which builds upon the ideas introduced in the original novel.
