Focusing on the English word 'now' and its German equivalent 'nun', this seminar paper explores their roles as discourse markers in spoken conversation. It examines how these terms indicate discourse structures while also considering their original and non-propositional meanings. Utilizing the London-Lund Corpus for English and the Freiburg Corpus for German, the analysis highlights similarities and differences between the two languages. The study is limited to specific sections of the corpora, making its findings exemplary rather than exhaustive.
