Lieutenant Albert Werper grapples with deep-seated resentment and self-pity after being assigned to a remote post in the Congo, a punishment for his dishonorable actions. Initially grateful for avoiding court-martial, his six months of isolation and monotony lead him to brood over his fate and develop a hatred for those who sent him there. As he reflects on his past life in Brussels, his feelings of regret intensify, particularly towards his captain, who embodies the authority responsible for his exile.
