Set in the summer of 1937, the story follows eleven-year-old Philip Nason as he navigates life in a working-class Detroit neighborhood after his family's constant relocations. Struggling with loneliness, he immerses himself in daydreams and cartoon fantasies, using notebooks to express his creativity. However, Philip finds it challenging to engage in traditional boyhood games, highlighting his feelings of isolation and the difficulties of fitting in within his new environment.
