The author, a prominent science writer turned fiction novelist, was known for his ability to blend scientific plausibility with compelling storytelling. His works often challenged societal norms, particularly regarding women's rights, making him a significant figure in various fiction genres. Despite a brief career, he produced a wealth of influential literature. Notably, he dictated the final episode of his unfinished novel, Hilda Wade, to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle shortly before his death in 1899, which was later published as The Episode of the Dead Man Who Spoke.
