Set against the backdrop of the turbulent French Revolutionary period, the story follows fishing captain Jean Cotterell, who becomes the sole survivor after his vessel sinks. Rescued by the French frigate "The Hortense," he encounters a chaotic crew influenced by radical political ideologies. As the ship, part of a larger fleet delivering corn to France, is separated from its allies, Cotterell is thrust into a fierce naval battle against British frigates, highlighting the clash of nations and the tumult of the era.
