After returning from combat and a prison camp in Vietnam, Sergeant Jack Kilroy seeks solitude in New Mexico but finds himself drawn into the lives of others. His peaceful fishing spot attracts a variety of visitors, including a cat, its owner, and an old Indian. As he attempts to unwind, he becomes entangled in high-stakes poker games and the pressing issues facing his army buddies, local Indians, and the community, including theft, murder, and supernatural conflicts. Jack's desire for peace is challenged by the complexities around him.
