Set against the backdrop of a snowbound fortress in France, the story follows Jean Mardet, a master distiller consumed by his passion for absinthe. After abandoning his family, he returns to Provence, where he creates his unique brew in secret. Jean becomes a mystical figure to a young boy in the village, sharing the enchanting stories and secrets of absinthe. However, when absinthe is outlawed in 1915, Jean vanishes, leaving the boy to uncover the drink's mysteries and forge his own path, intertwined with the legacy of the green liqueur.
