The story follows ten-year-old Tshmal, who becomes fascinated with the real-life figure of Miss Karana from Island of the Blue Dolphins. As she writes emails to Miss Karana's spirit, Tshmal discovers connections between the mysterious song of the lone woman and her own reservation's language, Chamtela. With the help of her grouchy great uncle Wh Poweya, the last fluent speaker of their ancestral language, they embark on a journey to uncover the meaning behind the woman's song and aid her spirit in completing its journey. The narrative emphasizes themes of family, determination, and cultural heritage.
