Earl "Lefty" Calvin, a one-armed roofer, navigates personal and professional challenges, including his feelings for a young waitress and a struggling business. When a raccoon steals his prosthetic arm, he believes life can't get worse. However, a tornado changes everything, leading him and his rag-tag crew to take on the controversial task of repairing an AIDS hospice. This experience forces them to confront both external hostility and their own biases, ultimately shaping their perspectives and relationships.
