Set in 1793 during a tumultuous period of war in Europe, the story follows Thomas Paine Kydd, a young wig-maker who is forcibly recruited into the British Navy. As he boards the formidable 98-gun ship Duke William, Kydd faces the brutal realities of naval life and the perils of battle. Through his journey, he learns to navigate the challenges of seamanship and grows to respect the bravery of his shipmates, ultimately embracing his role as a sailor and defender of Britain.
