Set against the backdrop of the Dutch-Aceh War in 19th century Sumatra, a young boy named George Villiers is saved from sacrifice by To-Ho, a member of a hidden tribe of ape-men. Raised in the jungle, George encounters a reclusive scientist who has discovered a substance called phoebium, capable of destroying gold. This invention aims to protect the ape-men's secluded existence from invading prospectors, intertwining themes of survival, cultural conflict, and the impact of greed on nature.
