The plot revolves around the eccentric millionaire David Van Wyck, who decides to give away his fortune, leaving his wife Anne with only her jewelry. Tensions escalate when David witnesses Anne's flirtation with an old friend, prompting him to include her gems in his giveaway. The next morning, he is found murdered in a locked room, shifting suspicion onto Anne and several guests, each with their own motives. The story is narrated by a guest secretly in love with Anne, who hopes she is not the murderer.
