Donny and Benny are best friends living in a divided community, separated by railroad tracks that symbolize their town's divisions of wealth, race, and culture. They face constant peer pressure and attempts from their community to end their friendship. Donny, from a wealthy family, is a popular student athlete known for his kindness and open-mindedness, often befriending those from Benny's side of town. Benny, whose parents work tirelessly to support their family, feels lucky to have Donny as a friend, especially since Donny has stood by him despite societal pressures to discriminate. Now, it's Benny's turn to support Donny. Previously, their dog, Skipper, was killed, and Donny was dealing with significant family issues. The story begins with Donny in critical condition after a terrible accident where he was hit by a car, leaving him unconscious in Sabreville hospital. Benny is determined to be there for Donny during this challenging time, showcasing the strength of their friendship amidst the challenges posed by their divided community.
