In his last act as a detective, Brent Dorsey kills a teen-age predator. It's an act that firms up Dorsey's decision to leave law enforcement. Wanting to be a change agent instead of an enforcer, he resigns from the Monroe City Police Department to become a teacher. His idealism faces a new form of reality when confronted by a student psychotic, Ellie Jean Robbins. His failure to encourage orrespond to Ellie's offer of love precipitates a cunning act of revenge that includes murder and makes him the focus of the murder investigation.
