Eventually, seven people are involved in the plot to leave Eastern Russia and find refuge in Alaska, but they must solve many problems while maintaining secrecy. Bush pilot Dan Newcomb (hero of Detour in Oregon) becomes involved with the Ivanovs' escape, pulling a few strings, providing unexpected assistance to the Ivanov family.
