Set in 1812, the story follows six-year-old Pip, an orphan who meets an escaped convict in a churchyard. Terrified, Pip steals food and a file from his home, where he lives with his abusive sister and her gentle husband, Joe Gargery. The next day, the convict is recaptured by soldiers during a confrontation with another escaped prisoner, leading to their return to prison ships. This encounter sets the stage for Pip's life, intertwining themes of fear, innocence, and the harsh realities of his world.
